Waking up by Clare Evans

Margate Yoga presents ‘Waking up’, a series of figurative paintings by Clare Evans from January 24th -26th as part of the Off Season Margate art festival.

These large, dynamic paintings serve as a time capsule of Clare’s 4-year-old daughter’s waking movements and stretches in the weeks before she started school. Clare used familiar tools from her past work decorating homes and galleries, along with leftover paints from decorating her home while her baby slept. 

 “There’s a freedom in using house paint to create ‘art.’ I like the fact that you don’t have to rely on expensive materials to make big pictures.”

Painting with domestic house paint and tools symbolises Clare's shift from domestic duties to creative expression, using the materials of her home as a bridge between the two. It reflects her process of reclaiming her artistic identity while navigating the bittersweet transition of her daughter starting school.
